Hong Kong Lifting Covid Ban on 9 Countries From April 1

Soon after the coronavirus invaded China, flights were banned all over the world. The deadliest disease that stopped the whole world from functioning properly. But after 2021, the situation started to get better day by day. Things started to be normal as soon as people started getting vaccinated. Countries started to lift bans at the national level first, then at the international level.

The latest ban was imposed in China following the zero-Covid policy due to the high positivity rate of the new variant Omicron in January. A travel ban was imposed on 9 countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Canada, India, the Philippines, and Pakistan. Nepal was added later to this travel ban list.

After receiving severe backlash from businesses and residents to uplift the lockdown and reopening of schools, Hong Kong is about to lift the ban from approximately 9 countries, including Pakistan and India, from next month.

Residents of China became frustrated due to the massive lockdown durations, many of which have been implemented for two years.

Lam said in a news briefing:

"The flight ban is no longer timely and appropriate...it will bring huge disturbances to Hong Kong people who are stuck in these nine countries if we continue the ban. The measures are not to be eased immediately. As the situation gets more stabilized, my understanding is that the social-distancing measures will be gradually relaxed accordingly,"

Schools will reopen on April 19, 2022. Restaurants will open on April 21st with a dine-in policy. And a gathering of a maximum of four people is allowed. Nightclubs, beaches, and pubs will be opened in the second phase, and residents are allowed to exercise outdoors without a mask. Otherwise, masks are still compulsory outside the houses. Hotel quarantine will be 14 days upon testing negative. Also, she stated that measures will be taken from April 20. And a seven-day vaccinated quarantine will be imposed.

This is all due to the high death rates in Hong Kong and all over the world. Hong Kong has reported the most deaths per million all over the world. The new variant is spread mostly among elderly people. The densely packed city has recorded more than 1 million infections since the pandemic started and about 5,000 deaths, most of them in the past month. Businesses and the economy are facing severe losses due to closure, while doctors are reporting high levels of mental illness among low-income families.

In the long term, authorities will work on another road map for Hong Kong and seek to reopen the city’s border with the mainland.

Lam said:

"In Hong Kong, freedom is much emphasized, and our society is rather egocentric-it’s hard to achieve total compliance. A plan to carry out mass coronavirus testing would be put on hold, citing experts who said it was not a suitable time."

Vaccination boosters will be increased to 90 percent in teenagers, children, and the elderly beginning this month.

There are some assumptions that the social distancing measures will be fully relaxed by June 1, when a sixth wave of the disease would start and last for two months, so they will be fully relaxed.

The predicted number of infections by June is 6.7 million, with a cumulative number of deaths of up to 10,000.
