PTI Leads by a Wide Margin in KPK Local Government Elections

The ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-Insaf, has won the second phase of local elections against Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-fazl (JUI-F). JUI-F won the local government elections three months ago in the first phase with a vast majority.

On Thursday, the second phase of local government elections started. The voting was held in 65 tehsils in 18 districts of the province. The positions of mayor and chairman were pooled.

In the second phase, polling also took place in 1830 union councils and 65 cities. Of 28,020 candidates, 651 contested for the seats of chairman and mayor. Besides that, 12,980 seats were contested for general village and neighborhood councils.

2668 seats were reserved for women, 6451 seats were reserved for peasants, 5213 for youth, and 57 seats were reserved for minorities.

After polling time, the counting of votes began. The partial results of the vote count put PTI in the lead in 22 tehsils of the province. The election results from 48 tehsils had not been compiled as of late Friday.

PTI candidates have been declared successful in 19, but the party claims victory in 32. In the second phase of the election, JUI-F got victory in the 8 tehsil council of KPK. According to media reports, PMLN leads in five and PPP leads in one. Other parties that got seats were:

  1. Jamaat-e-Islami JI (3 seats).
  2. Awami National Party (2 seats).
  3. Qaumi Watan Party (2 seats)
  4. Independent candidates (2 seats).
  5. Rah-e-Haq party (1 seat).
  6. Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (1 seat).

There were reports of some minor conflicts between followers of other parties. Two individuals were killed and two others were injured on Thursday during polling. However, the polling continued, and no unmanageable incident occurred.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf won local government elections in Barikot, Swat district, Bezai, Batkhela and Dargai, Malakand; Khal, Balambat and Adizai, Lower Dir, Larjam in Upper Dir, Puran and Bisham, Shangla, Mastuj, Chitral; and Oghi, Mansehra and Tanawal, Abbottabad.

However, the performance of JUI-F remained unimpressive. JUI-F won the 2019 local government elections and appeared as the largest political party in the first phase of local government elections. JUI-F won the 2019 elections in 23 tehsil councils.

Farrukh Habib, state minister for information, said that PTI has swept the local government elections under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan in KPK. He said stooges of foreign powers got the first reaction of the public.

The minister also tagged a copy of the informal results of local government elections, which showed PTI winning 32 seats in the KPK elections.

Independent candidates won 12 seats, the JUI-F won 7, the PMLN won 4, and the PPP won one. People in Pakistan's government also praised the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf team for having a huge victory in local government elections.

In his tweet, the prime minister said that the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have rejected the traitors who have sold themselves to foreign masters. He further said that it is a clear warning to all traitors about what awaits them in their constituencies.

Sikandar Sultan Raja, the chief election commissioner, has also praised the work of law enforcement agencies like the police, Pakistan army, frontier corps, and frontier constabulary. They helped make the KPK local government elections go smoothly, he said.
