WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that could transform how users interact with artificial intelligence on the platform. The messaging giant has started testing a “Chat Memory” feature for its Meta AI assistant, designed to remember key details shared by users to deliver more personalized and intuitive responses in future conversations.
Currently available to select beta users, this feature enables Meta AI to store contextual information users share voluntarily. For instance, if someone mentions that they are vegetarian while seeking restaurant suggestions, Meta AI will retain that preference and apply it to similar queries later. Similarly, if a user expresses interest in topics like ancient history or tech news, the chatbot will prioritize these subjects when offering recommendations or generating responses.
The new functionality brings a memory tab where users can manage what Meta AI remembers. It provides full transparency by letting users view stored data, update preferences, or delete specific details or the entire memory at any time. This offers a strong layer of control over how much information users want the AI to retain, ensuring a balance between convenience and privacy.
One key point to highlight is that Meta AI’s memory is limited strictly to the data users choose to share directly with the assistant. It does not access or draw information from private WhatsApp chats or messages, preserving the app's end-to-end encryption and user privacy — a principle WhatsApp has long stood by.
The memory feature is being tested on Android beta version 2.25.11.13 and is expected to roll out more widely if user feedback is positive.
