YouTube Plans Daily Timer to Curb Shorts Overuse: A Move Toward Healthier Viewing Habits

In an effort to address growing concerns over excessive screen time, YouTube is experimenting with a new feature designed to help users manage their consumption of Shorts — the platform’s increasingly popular short-form video content. The planned update would introduce a daily timer, allowing users to set a viewing limit for Shorts each day.


Once the time limit is reached, YouTube would pause access to the Shorts feed for the rest of the day. This change is intended to encourage more mindful content consumption and reduce the compulsive, endless scrolling behavior associated with short videos. While users may still be able to access individual short videos after the limit is reached, the full Shorts feed would remain inaccessible until the next day.

This potential feature builds on YouTube’s existing wellness tools, such as “Take a Break” and “Bedtime Reminders,” which are already in place for regular video content. By extending similar controls to Shorts, YouTube is acknowledging the addictive nature of vertical, bite-sized content and taking steps to help users regain control over their screen time.

The idea of limiting access to addictive features aligns with broader industry trends, where major tech platforms are increasingly being held accountable for user well-being.
